Many customers are unclear about the functions of diesel engine cylinder liners, so we will explain them today. First, it is necessary to understand the working principle of the cylinder: a cylinder is a cylindrical space that guides the reciprocating motion of the piston. It forms a combustion chamber together with the cylinder head and the piston. During operation, the cylinder surface is prone to wear due to high-temperature and high-pressure fuel gas and the continuous movement of the piston. Once the wear reaches a certain level, a large amount of fuel gas will leak into the crankcase, degrading the performance of the diesel engine and deteriorating the engine oil.


Therefore, the main functions of the cylinder liner are obvious, as listed below:

1. Improve the strength and wear resistance of the cylinder;

2. Facilitate maintenance and reduce maintenance costs. The cylinder liner is the first component to wear during cylinder operation, and only the cylinder liner needs to be repaired or replaced.

3. For two-stroke diesel engines, the cylinder liners are equipped with ports that are opened and closed by the piston to achieve gas distribution.


Commonly used diesel engine cylinder liners are made of high-grade wear-resistant alloy cast irons, such as high-phosphorus cast iron, boron-containing cast iron, nodular cast iron, austenitic cast iron, etc. To further enhance the wear resistance of cylinder liners, molybdenum spraying or carbonization treatment can be applied to their surfaces.
